Scholastic Reading Counts! is an independent reading program which combines reading practice and software-based reading assessment. This program, based on the Lexile framework, is proven to develop reading skills, help raise test scores, and motivate students to achieve reading success. Westlake Elementary recently updated our computer programs and the book list now includes over 48,000 titles. The Reading Counts! program is used by students in grades 2 through 5. It is also available to kindergarten and first grade students through teacher recommendation. This wonderful program is brought to you by your Direct Donation dollars and is supported by the volunteer efforts of your PFA.
The program begins with great books – students read fiction, nonfiction, and curriculum-based books based on their interests and Lexile level, ensuring they will enjoy and have success with what they read.
In the school library, Reading Counts books have been identified with a color coded sticker that corresponds to the Lexile system. However, we only have a fraction of the 48,000 titles available. Please use the Online Catalog to see the complete list of books, searchable by title, author and Lexile. Scholastic adds titles to the catalog on a monthly basis so be sure to check back frequently.
ONLINE CATALOG
After selecting and reading the book, students then take a brief computerized quiz about it in the library. They earn points for each quiz they pass. Points vary according to the length and difficulty of the book read. We keep track of the points each student has received and then award prizes when certain point levels have been met. Westlake Elementary has had great success with the program, and have found that it:
- MOTIVATES students with suggested reading choices that match their interests and reading levels.
- EMPOWERS teachers and staff with reports and actionable date at the student and school level.
- REINFORCES comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills.
